The NSJU begins cooperation with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in Sanremo

On 19 November 2025, an important working meeting was held between Mykola Onishchuk, Rector of the National School of Judges of Ukraine, and representatives of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) in Sanremo, one of the world's leading institutions in the field of training specialists in international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal justice.

The IIHL delegation included the Institute's President Giorgio Battisti, Secretary General Gian Luca Beruto, Director of the Department of Refugee and Migration Law Claudio Delfabro, and Director of the Military Department Nigel Happenstall.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects for establishing a partnership and identified key areas for future cooperation. These include the development of training courses for Ukrainian judges on the specifics of appellate courts' consideration of criminal offences against peace and international law, crimes against property in conditions of martial law or a state of emergency, the assessment of evidence obtained as a result of covert investigative actions, and combating human trafficking during wartime.

The participants considered the possibility of developing and conducting joint training programmes, short-term courses and training sessions with the participation of international experts, training Ukrainian judge-trainers, as well as exchanges of experience and study visits within the framework of international technical assistance programmes.

Cooperation with IIHL opens up new opportunities for strengthening the professional training of Ukrainian judges and implementing international standards of justice in the context of contemporary challenges.
