Ukrainian judges received training on international labour standards: outcomes of the visit to the ILO International Training Centre

How are modern international labour standards and European Union law applied in national case law? Ukrainian judges, who have successfully completed a specialised Training of Trainers Programme following two weeks of intensive training, know the answer to this question.

The programme was organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in collaboration with the ILO International Training Centre (ITCILO) and the National School of Judges of Ukraine. The online phase and the face-to-face module in Turin (Italy) gave participants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of international labour standards and their application in national judicial practice, as well as to familiarise themselves with key provisions of European Union law and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

One of the programme’s outcomes has been the formation of a community of judge-trainers who will share the knowledge they have acquired with their colleagues, thereby promoting a more consistent application of international labour standards and European Union law in Ukrainian judicial practice.

Strengthening judges’ capacity to apply international and European legal instruments is an important step towards Ukraine’s European integration and bringing national judicial practice into line with European standards.

The programme was implemented as part of the ILO project ‘Promoting Inclusive Labour Market Governance Reform in Support of Ukraine’s Recovery and Accession to the European Union’, which is co-financed by the European Union.
